U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's recent remarks regarding his country's Indo-Pacific Strategy "distorted facts and created falsehoods, only to serve the U.S. geopolitical strategy," a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Singapore said on Thursday.

Delivering the Fullerton Lecture, organized by the International Institute of Strategic Studies in Singapore on Tuesday, Austin said the U.S. approach to the Taiwan issue was "consistent with our one-China policy"

The spokesperson said in a statement on the embassy's website that the remarks were "both deceptive and arrogant, adding that "there is only one China in the world, and the One China policy has only one standard and one bottom line."

"He not only interfered in China's internal affairs by referring to matters relating to Taiwan and Xinjiang, but also played up the so-called China threat in an attempt to drive a wedge between China and its neighbors," said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson also said Austin's remarks relating to South China Sea and China-India relations were made to sow discord between China and its neighbors.

"Repeated and groundless attacks against China by the U.S. are nothing but provocations," the spokesperson added, before urging the U.S. to participate in regional cooperation in "a more humble manner."
