Dark past of Fort Detrick: Researchers killed innocents with anthrax
00:56

Over 15 million Chinese have signed an open letter calling on the World Health Organization (WHO) to investigate the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick (USAMRIID). Published on July 17, the petition appealed to the WHO to investigate the lab and urged the U.S. to answer the call from people around the world.

The lab, with a dark history and disturbing reputation, has caught people's concerns and attention due to its deadly pathogen leakage and risky research, such as Ebola. Even more, two suspects from USAMRIID killed five innocent people with letters laced with anthrax in September 2001. Seventeen others became infected with the dangerous bacteria.
