International Tiger Day: Cherish all big cats!
CGTN

International Tiger Day is celebrated every year on July 29 to raise public awareness about endangered tigers.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), there may have been 100,000 tigers at the beginning of the 20th century, but the population had fallen drastically to 3,200 by the year 2010.

Due to the alarming population drop, International Tiger Day was first observed in 2010 when 13 tiger range countries came together at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia and agreed on a global goal to double the number of wild tigers to 6,000 by 2022.

Wild tigers are top predators in Asian forests and grasslands. The big cats used to roam across most of Asia, but now they're restricted to just seven percent of their original range across 13 countries. Countries are now working to connect their isolated habitat and protect tigers.
