Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica finished the women's 100m final in 10.61 seconds, not only winning the gold medal but also breaking an Olympic record that has stood for 33 years. Her performance is the second-fastest in a women's 100m race, following the world record of 10.49 seconds set by Florence Griffith-Joyner of the U.S. in 1988.

Thompson-Herah's teammates Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson claimed silver and bronze in 10.74 and 10.76 seconds respectively. China's Ge Manqi finished the semifinal in 11.22 seconds, failing to reach the final.

China's Su Bingtian finished men's 100m qualification in 10.05 seconds, qualifying for the semifinal. Su's target is to make the final in Tokyo.

In men's long jump, China's Huang Changzhou finished qualification with 7.96 meters and he will compete in the final on August 2. Huang did not think he found his best form until the last jump, but is convinced that he can do better in the final.

China's Gong Lijiao, Song Jiayuan and Gao Yang will compete in the women's shot put final on Sunday. It will be the fourth edition of the Olympic Games for two-time World Championship winner Gong. She already has one silver and one bronze medal, so the 32-year-old veteran is targeting gold this time.
