Britons set new world record in mixed swimming relay at Tokyo 2020

Team China won the silver medal of the mixed 4X100 meters medley relay swimming final on Saturday, with Team Great Britain (GB) taking their first gold in the pool at Tokyo Olympic Games.

Team GB's female swimmers Kathleen Dawson and Anna Hopkin and male swimmers Adam Peaty and James Guy clocked three minutes and 37.58 seconds, a new world record.

Team China's female swimmers Zhang Yufei and Yang Junxuan, and male swimmers Xu Jiayu and Yan Zibei touched in 3:38.86 to finish second, ahead of Team Australia (3:38.95).

This was Zhang's fourth medal at the Games, as she won the golds in both the women's 200m freestyle relay and women's 200m butterfly events on July 29 and claimed the silver medal in 100m butterfly on July 26.

Earlier in the day, American Kathleen Ledecky won her third straight Olympic gold medal in the women's 800m freestyle final. China's Wang Jianjiahe finished fifth.

Ledecky now has seven gold medals to her credit, only after Jenny Thompson's eight, in terms of the most decorated U.S. female swimmer, according to ESPN.

Kaylee McKeown of Australia won the women's 200m backstroke event.
