Tokyo reported a record high of 4,058 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the metropolitan government announced as the Olympic games entered into the 9th day.

Newly confirmed cases in the country surged to 12,341 as of 6:30 p.m. local time, the highest ever for Japan and up 15 percent on the day, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The new records come a day after the Japanese government declared states of emergency in the western prefecture of Osaka and three prefectures near Olympic host Tokyo to the end of August, to curb the new surge of COVID-19 cases.
