Chinese-Canadian singer and actor Kris Wu, or Wu Yifan, was detained by Beijing police for suspected rape, police from Chaoyang District announced late Saturday night.

"Wu Yifan, 30, Canadian nationality, is now criminally detained in accordance with the law by Chaoyang branch of Beijing Public Security Bureau on suspicion of rape," police in Beijing's Chaoyang district said in a statement posted on social media platform Weibo, using Wu's Chinese name.

Wu was accused by 19-year-old student Du Meizhu of luring underage women to have sex by claiming he was recruiting actresses, drawing widespread condemnation of the star on Chinese social media. Du claimed that the number of the victims, including herself, is far more than eight, and at least two among them are minors.
