China's first domestic-support deepwater oil and gas project, the Liuhua 16-2 offshore oil fields cluster, consisting of three oil fields, started production in the South China Sea on August 2. The complicated ocean condition has made the oil field cluster one of the hardest projects of its kind in the world. It is expected to provide more than 3.5 million tons of oil per year at its peak.
