Chinese diver Xie Siyi took the gold medal in the men's 3m springboard at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday with 558.74 points.

This was Team China's sixth time winning gold in the men's 3m springboard event. Xie became the fifth Chinese athlete to win it.

His teammate Wang Zongyuan took the silver with 534.90 points, followed by Britain's Jack Laugher with 518.00.

Xie and Wang previously paired to win men's synchronized 3m springboard gold last week, which was a great start for the Olympic debut of 19-year-old Wang.

The men's 3m springboard event almost became a head-to-head competition between Xie and Wang. Wang beat Xie in the qualification contest and led until the last dive in the semifinal when Xie achieved a comeback win in the last bout.

That victory showed Xie's advantage in consistency and mental strength, which became his biggest weapon in the final. Xie received the highest score in four of the six dives and remained in the lead until he sealed the title with forward 4½ somersaults (109C) rated 102.60 points.

Wang chose the same move as Xie in the last dive and matched his score, but it was not enough to take the title. As the first Chinese athlete who got over 600 points in the men's 3m springboard (in the Olympic trial in January), Wang represents the future of the Chinese diving team.
