Brazil's Cunha wins women's marathon swimming gold at Tokyo Olympics

Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil claimed the gold medal of the marathon swimming women's 10km final at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old won the race with a time of 1:59:30.8, ahead of 25 others who started this morning at Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo to swim seven laps of 1.4km and the final sprint.

Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands, Olympic champion in Rio 2016, took the silver in 1:59:31.7 and Kareena Lee of Australia the bronze in 1:59:32.5.

The 27-year-old Dutch became the first female marathon swimmer to win two medals at the Olympic Games, according to International Swimming Federation (FINA). 

China's Xin Xin, aged 24, finished eighth in the event.
