Beijing extends congratulations on Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's inauguration

Beijing on Friday extended congratulations to Iran's new president Ebrahim Raisi as he was sworn into office.

"We believe that under the leadership of President Ebrahim Raisi, Iran will achieve greater progress in nation building and socioeconomic development," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying in a statement.

Raisi was elected Iran's new president on June 18, and formally assumed office after the supreme leader's decree on Tuesday and the swearing-in ceremony in the parliament on Thursday.

In his inauguration ceremony, which was broadcast live on the state TV, Raisi vowed to protect Iran's borders and political, economic and cultural independence.

Local reports say Raisi will probably introduce his cabinet to the parliament by Sunday.

Hua also hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries, while calling for a deepening of ties.

"China and Iran are comprehensive strategic partners. China attaches great importance to developing bilateral relations and stands ready to work with Iran to take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year to elevate bilateral relations to a new level," the spokesperson said.
