Ebrahim Raisi sworn in as Iran's eighth president
00:28

Iran's new president – cleric Ebrahim Raisi – was sworn in as the Islamic Republic's eighth president on Thursday. The conservative judiciary chief succeeds Hassan Rouhani, after winning elections in June, which were marked by record abstention. Several foreign officials attended the inauguration. Raisi's rise to power comes as Iran faces an economy battered by Western sanctions, a grinding health crisis and thorny negotiations on its nuclear deal with world powers.
