Forest fires in Algeria have killed 42 people, including 25 soldiers deployed to help put out the blaze in the Kabylie region, east of the capital Algiers. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune tweeted on Tuesday that the soldiers died after rescuing over 100 people and offered his condolences to their families.

Dozens of separate fires have raged through forest areas across northern Algeria since Monday night. Local media said 73 fires were reported in 13 provinces.
