Expert calls for promoting aboriginal rights in Australia
04:22

According to the report from the Australian Institute of Criminology, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 28 percent of the total prison population in Australia as of June 30, 2019, while making up just over three percent of the total population. The toll of indigenous deaths in custody is also on the rise. Daryl Guppy, CEO of Guppytraders.com, who has worked with aboriginal settlements and communities for more than a decade, told CGTN that most aboriginal crimes are caused by poverty. He called for more "involvement of aboriginal people within the formal structures of government" and empower indigenous communities to address aboriginal issues with "aboriginally-designed solutions."
