A makeshift coronavirus testing lab based on cutting-edge technology has been set up in east China's Yangzhou City, which reported more than 500 cases of COVID-19 since the latest outbreak in July.

The "Falcon" air membrane laboratory is the largest makeshift lab of its kind in China. It was set up within just 36 hours and is assisting the city in conducting multiple rounds of testing for COVID-19.

"The lab has two experimental areas, each having five cabins. The lab can test 150,000 tubes of samples each day," said Xie Jiangtao, head of the lab.

The compartment in the middle is the reagent preparation zone. The two cabins beside it are the sample processing zones. The two cabins on both sides are the amplification zones, where the test results are obtained.

The lab can test a maximum of 1.5 million people per day.

"To prevent contamination, air flows from the preparation zone to the sample processing zone and then to the amplification zone. It flows in one direction," said Wang Ya, a laboratory staff.

In June 2021, the Falcon air membrane laboratory was put into operation for the first time in south China's Guangzhou City amid an outbreak there.

In Yangzhou, the staff has optimized the lab's design, expanding the amplification area and improving its ability to detect the virus.
