The United States logged 186,840 new COVID-19 cases and 1,089 deaths on Friday, according to a New York Times tracker.

Since January last year, the tracker showed that at least one in nine people who live in the United States have been infected, and at least one in 534 people have died.

The average number of new cases of the last seven days in the U.S. reached 128,537 Friday, a two percent increase from the day before.

Of all COVID-19 hospitalizations, the combined totals of eight states - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas - make up approximately 51 percent of patients, though the states account for only around 24 percent of the nation's population, according to CNN citing Census data.
