Japan's government expanded a coronavirus state of emergency to seven new prefectures from Friday to September 12 as it battles a record wave of infections days before the start of the Paralympic Games, Kyodo news agency reported on Tuesday.

The government also extended the duration of the state of emergency in Tokyo and four other prefectures in line with the new directive.
