Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iraqi President Barham Salih pledged to cooperate in fighting terrorism during a phone conversation on Wednesday.

China firmly supports Iraq's efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, while fighting terrorism and maintaining its national security and stability, said President Xi.

He added that the Chinese side also supports the Iraqi people's independent choice of a development path that suits their own national realities, and opposes any external forces' interference in the domestic affairs of Iraq.

Xi said he hopes different fractions and parties of Iraq can be united to advance new achievements in the political progress and secure lasting stability and prosperity for the country.

Noting Iraq was one of the first Arab countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, Xi said China values the bilateral ties, and will continue to work for a greater development of the China-Iraq strategic partnership.

Salih said the Iraqi side is ready for closer strategic communication with China to jointly cope with the rapidly changing regional and international situation, and cooperate with China on combating terrorism so as to maintain peace and stability.

Iraq resolutely pursues the one-China policy, and understands the measures China has taken to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, said Salih.

He added the Iraqi side appreciates China's assistance in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and rebuilding the country's economy, and vowed more bilateral trade and investment.
