Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday encouraged officials in local villages in southwest China's Yunnan Province to continue working on rural vitalization under the guidance of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and promote prosperity and stability on the border.

Xi, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks in his reply to a letter from 10 veteran Party chiefs from nine border villages of Cangyuan Wa Autonomous County in Yunnan.

Getting rid of poverty is an important step toward a happy life, Xi said.

Xi added that he hopes Party chiefs can continue to play an exemplary role in leading villagers in building a beautiful homeland, maintaining ethnic unity, and safeguarding territorial integrity.

Cangyuan Wa Autonomous County lifted over 40,000 people from extreme poverty by the end of 2019.
