China on Monday blamed the United States for failing to honor its commitments of peace and reconstruction in Afghanistan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin termed the U.S. "the major cause and the biggest external factor in the Afghan issue."

"It cannot simply walk away. The United States has pledged multiple times it would help Afghanistan maintain stability, prevent chaos and help with its peace and reconstruction. But we've seen constant media reports of the U.S. doing dishonest things, showing no bottom lines," said Wang.

"We hope the United States matches its words with its actions, taking up its responsibilities on the Afghan issue, and honoring its commitments over Afghanistan's development, reconstruction and humanitarian aid," he added.

Expressing hope for the prompt restoration of economic and financial order after the end of war, Wang said China will continue to support peace and reconstruction in Afghanistan and do its best to facilitate socioeconomic development.

Inclusive government

"We hope Afghanistan can form an open, inclusive and broad-based government; uphold moderate and prudent domestic and foreign policies; and respond to the shared aspiration of the Afghan people and the international community," Wang said, commenting on the Taliban's stated plan to announce a new government structure soon.

The spokesperson also said that China is highly concerned about the security of Chinese institutions and personnel in Afghanistan. He said the Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan is still operating normally and most Chinese citizens have safely returned home with the help of the embassy.

As for the few people who chose to stay in Afghanistan, Wang said the embassy has kept close contact with them and asked relevant Afghan parties to take concrete measures to ensure their safety.

Wang added the Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan had issued a number of security reminders. "Chinese citizens in Afghanistan who have not yet reported to the embassy are requested to report their current addresses, itineraries and contact information of themselves and their relatives in China," he urged.
