Mike Budenholzer, head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, signed a three-year contract extension with the team, according to ESPN. The team announced the news on Tuesday,

Budenholzer joined the Bucks in 2018. Since then, the Bucks' records in the regular season were 60-22, 56-17 and 46-26. He helped them beat the Miami Heat, the Brooklyn Nets, the Atlanta Hawks and the Phoenix Suns in the NBA playoffs and finals in 2021 and win the team's second championship in franchise history.

Budenholzer had one year left of his previous deal, but the Bucks decided to keep him through to the 2024-25 season.

"What an incredible journey we've been on, and winning the NBA Championship this season makes us appreciate how difficult it is to win and how grateful we are to have the best players and coaches in place to get the job done. Mike's strong leadership, coaching expertise, commitment to player development and adaptability have been instrumental as we work together to compete for and win championships. We're thrilled with the work Bud has done together with Jon Horst and Peter Feigin and are proud to sign him to this extension," said Bucks owners Marc Lasry, Wes Edens and Jamie Dinan in a statement.

"Bud is a great coach and a fantastic partner to work with every day as we build a team that consistently competes for championships. We're extremely grateful for the leadership Bud provides, and we look forward to building on the success we've had over the last three years and congratulate Bud on this well-deserved extension," said Bucks general manager Jon Horst.

"The appreciation I have for being a part of the Bucks organization is hard to express. And today, to realize that Marc and Wes and Jamie from our ownership group, along with Jon as our GM, have extended my contract to be the head coach is very special – thank you!" said Budenholzer.

As the defending champions, the Bucks retained Bobby Portis but let P.J. Tucker go during the off-season.

Though many believe that champions don't change, they may face tougher challenges in the 2021-22 season.

Franchise players Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday's ability to remain healthy was key to the Bucks' success last season. Their opponents did not seem to share that luck last season, but that will not always be the case. For example, can the Bucks match the Brooklyn Nets with a full squad that includes Kevin Durant, James Harden, Kyrie Irving and Blake Griffin?

Moreover, the Los Angeles Lakers were knocked out in the first round in the Western Conference last season because neither LeBron James nor Anthony Davis was healthy enough to give their best performance on the court. Now they have had enough rest and were joined by another former MVP Russell Westbrook, how confident will the Bucks be facing the purple and gold if the two teams meet in the NBA Finals?

These are what Budenholzer and his team will face in the 2021-22 season.
