China vows to promote people's welfare and redistribute income to achieve "common prosperity" in the country, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, adding that the push won't rob the rich.

Having achieved the goal of building a moderately prosperous society, "we will continue to make the economic pie bigger and divide it well," said Han Wenxiu, an official with the Central Committee for Financial and Economic Affairs.

The country will vigorously push for high-quality development, raise the income of both urban and rural residents, gradually narrow the gap in distribution, and "resolutely prevent polarization," Han said.

The country encourages people to work hard to become rich, the CPC official said. The push for "common prosperity" in the country allows some people to get rich first and then help others become rich as well.

China will create opportunities for more people to get rich and expand middle-income groups. It will improve the distribution structure through ways like charitable donations, and increase adjustments by taxation, social security and transfer payments, according to Han.
