Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party(LDP) decided Thursday to hold its presidential election on September 29, with former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida expected to challenge incumbent Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

Suga's term as the LDP president is set to expire on September 30.

The LDP president is virtually assured of the premiership as the party has a majority in parliament's lower house.
