Ancient ginkgo leaves reveal climate changes' past and present
01:09

Ginkgo trees have been virtually unchanged for 200 million years. Now the patterns on their leaves may help scientists decipher ancient climates and predict what may happen in the future. The Smithsonian Natural History Museum in the U.S. houses a collection of ginkgo from the 19th century when the Industrial Revolution started changing the climate. The Smithsonian's Fossil Atmospheres Project has been running since 2016. Researchers hope to use knowledge from deep time geological events to learn about modern-day climate change.
