Fields of "giant rice" with an average height of about 2 meters per grain of rice have caught the attention of many in Changhong Village, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

According to Chen Yangpu, deputy director of the Chongqing Branch of the National Hybrid Rice R&D Center, the height is about twice that of conventional rice.

The variety is not only resistant to disease, flooding and saline-alkali, but carries sufficient nutrition. It also provides a perfect habitat by providing shade and shelter for aquatic products and mammals.

Growing tall rice is part of the village's strategy to boost its agriculture-based economy by attracting sightseers in the fields.
