Chinese volleyball legend Lang Ping said on Wednesday that she has resigned as the head coach of China's national women's volleyball team.

Lang confirmed last year that she would retire as head coach following the Tokyo Olympics.

"Whether it is perfect or not, I will hand over the team and bid farewell," Lang said. "Looking back on my volleyball career, I feel satisfied and happy."

"I will visit Suzhou to sweep the tomb for my mom," she added.

A month ago, Lang said she would take the blame after the defending champions crashed out in the group stage at the Tokyo Olympics, its worst performance in nearly 40 years.

Failing to make it to the quarterfinals marked China's worst finish at the Olympics since winning the title in Los Angeles in 1984. China's previous lowest ranking was seventh in 1992 at the Barcelona Games.

"I take all the blame as I'm the head coach. When facing difficulties, I could not find a solution and lead the team out of the trap," Lang said, choking for a moment during the post-match interview.

"I am really sorry that we failed to live up to the expectations of our fans back in China. They are so loyal and supportive to us."

"I think the match is the start of their preparations for the Paris Olympics," Lang said. "Those young players have bright futures and possibilities."

She noted that she did not expect the players to quickly forget their Tokyo campaign. "I hope they won't forget this Olympics quickly. Their experience here (in Tokyo) matters," Lang said.

Lang led China to triumph in three major tournaments, including the World Cup in 2015 and 2019, and the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.
