In the 1980s, the economy of Yu Village in east China's Zhejiang Province depended on mining but this came at the expense of the environment. In 2003, Xi Jinping, then Party chief of Zhejiang Province, proposed a "Green Zhejiang" strategy, saying "Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets." Since then, the village has transformed itself into a tourist destination, receiving up to 200 travelers a day.
