Tensions between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang (KMT) in China's Taiwan region led to a decade of intense battles near the coasts of Fujian Province in the late 1950s. Three small islands off Xiamen, now known as the "three-hero islands," were a strategic stronghold for defending the Chinese mainland. Only 1.8 kilometers of water separates Xiamen from the Taiwan region's Jinmen at the nearest point. Besides aerial assaults, rival "frontier broadcasters" fought for dominance of the airways across the Taiwan Straits as part of a psychological warfare. The world's largest military broadcast speaker still lies in the former battlefield as an evidence of the long-running war of words.
Join CGTN reporters on a livestream tour as we decode the voice of history and discover how a hulking speaker paved the way for peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Straits.
This livestream will be broadcast on the second day of Tides of Change Part II, a journey enchanted by a dynamic ocean in the East China Sea, a hub for the nation's reform and opening-up. More information about the series can be found on our page.
