Three small islands off Xiamen, southeast China, now known as the "three hero islands," were the frontlines of battles between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang (KMT) in China's Taiwan region in the late 1950s. Only 1.8 kilometers of water separates Xiamen from the Taiwan region's Kinmen at the nearest point. Besides aerial assaults, rival "frontier broadcasters" were set as part of psychological attacks. The world's largest military broadcast speaker still lies in the "three hero islands."
