Pakistan said on Tuesday that it would host a meeting of the foreign ministers of neighboring countries of Afghanistan.

In a statement, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said that Foreign Ministers' meeting on the Afghan issue among the neighboring countries of Afghanistan on Wednesday would be chaired by Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi and attended by China, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

"The neighbors of Afghanistan have a vital stake in the stability of the country. A peaceful, stable, united, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistan will contribute towards transit trade, people-to-people exchanges and security in the region," read the statement.

The meeting comes one day after the Taliban announced the formation of an interim government.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday that the situation in Afghanistan has undergone fundamental changes with many implications for regional security, which is of common concern to Afghanistan's neighbors.

He added Yue Xiaoyong, China's special envoy for Afghanistan, attended a meeting of special representatives for Afghanistan organized by Pakistan and attended by China, Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan on Saturday.
