The wild yellow croaker was a scarce species in southeast China's Fujian Province. In the daytime, it is silver-white. At night, the golden skin gland under each scale in the lower part of the side of the large yellow croaker can secrete and make the fish golden. Over the past few years, Fujian's Sanduao, a deep water harbor, has put more efforts into increasing the number of yellow croakers by breeding them.
