Authorities in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture, where U.S. forces are based, said on Friday the toxic chemicals in the contaminated water recently released to the local sewage system by U.S. Marines are much higher than the national standard.

The values of the pollutant chemicals perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) contained in the treated water were 13.4 times higher than the national guidelines, according to Okinawa authorities.
