A total of 158 COVID-19 cases, with all transmitted locally but one, have been reported in a city in southeast China's Fujian Province since September 10, according to local authorities.

Putian City recorded 28 cases on Thursday, adding to the surging number of virus infections caused by the newest Delta outbreak in China.

The outbreak started earlier this month after a man returning from Singapore tested positive and infected those close to him, which happened even after he went through a lengthy quarantine period and tested negative multiple times.

Government canvass found 3,987 people had close contact with those infected, and another 3,280 people were more or less exposed to the group. They have all been placed in quarantine as per COVID-19 prevention policies, said a local official at a press briefing on Friday.

More than 3,920,000 people have taken a nucleic acid test, over 3,810,000 of whom have received their results already, according to the official.

As of midnight Friday, six more areas were designated as medium-risk, taking the number from three to nine. Currently there is one designated high-risk area, which stayed unchanged.

Two of the 157 locally transmitted cases are suffering severe illness. The others are either displaying mild symptoms or facing light conditions. There are additionally nine asymptomatic cases.

The outbreak has spread to several other cities in Fujian, which has reported a total of 261 cases since early September.
