As the Windy Fire burns in the Sequoia National Forest near Johnsondale, California in the United States, hundreds of firefighters are battling to protect groves of giant sequoias amid warnings that the enormous ancient trees are at risk from out-of-control blazes.
The Sequoia National Forest is named for the majestic giant sequoia, also known as giant redwood. The species is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
