A large police contingent was called in on Saturday morning to deal with gunshots heard inside the Guayaquil Regional jail in Ecuador, according to local media El Universo.

People passing through the area said that they heard gunshots and also observed plumes of smoke emanating from the facility, the report said.

The National Police of Ecuador later tweeted that they had neutralized the melee and restored order within the jail. 

These disturbances occurred just 500 meters from the site of a previous riot on Tuesday at the Penitenciaria del Litoral, which left at least 118 inmates dead.
