Suga collected resignations from all members of the cabinet at a meeting on Monday, but they will continue to serve as acting ministers in the upcoming hours until the new cabinet is appointed.

The new prime minister is set to be elected by the Japanese parliament later on Monday.

With the Liberal Democratic Party-led ruling coalition controlling both chambers, the party's new leader, Fumio Kishida, is almost guaranteed to be elected prime minister at the parliamentary session.

Following his appointment, Kishida will announce the members of his new cabinet.

Public broadcaster NHK reported on Monday that Kishida plans to call a general election for the lower house of parliament on October 31.
