World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday called for global COVID-19 vaccine equality at a press conference on COVID-19 vaccine strategy.

"High- and upper-middle income countries have used 75% of all COVID-19 vaccines produced so far. Low-income countries have received less than half of one percent of the world's vaccines. In Africa, less than 5% of people are fully vaccinated," said Tedros.

At the press conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for $8 billion to equitably vaccinate 40% of people in all countries by the end of the year, as the WHO launched a plan aiming to inoculate 70% of the world by mid-2022.
