Russell Wilson, the starting quarterback (QB) for the Seattle Seahawks, will be absent for four to eight weeks after suffering a ruptured tendon in the middle finger of his right hand, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

The injury happened in Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Rams and Wilson underwent surgery on Friday. The Seahawks expect him to come back this season. The eight-time Pro Bowler has already started 149 straight games in his career.

The Seahawks will need to scratch their brains offensively without Wilson. They are now 2-3, two losses behind the Rams and the Arizona Cardinals in the National Football Conference (NFC) West.

"But there's something going on. There's definitely something going on and we've got to figure out what the extent of it is and what is the next step to deal with," said Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. "Nobody should question his toughness. Nobody should question his resolve. If he could have thrown a football and held on to it, he would have done it. Anybody that says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. So you can deal with all kinds of stuff with your hands and you can still throw the football, and he tried last night and did not have ... the control of the ball. So if he could have, he would have."

The team will have to rely on Geno Smith to run their offense. Smith completed 10 of 17 passes after replacing Wilson in Thursday's game and connected with DK Metcalf for one touchdown while allowing one interception.

"I thought Geno did a marvelous job last night. Geno's been practicing with us for all this time and waiting for his opportunity if called upon. The patience that he's shown with us and to stay with it and his relationship with Russ and the coaches, he's been impeccable. And when he went out, he executed like he can. He's a very talented football player. He's got a great arm, he's got great sense and he knows the system really well," said Carroll.

The Seahawks' concerns, however, do not end with their offense. Having allowed 476 yards in the loss against the Rams, they have the worst defense in the NFL after five weeks.

The Seahawks will next face the Pittsburg Steelers at Heinz Field on October 17.
