Lionrock, the 17th typhoon to affect China this year, made landfall on Saturday in south China's island province of Hainan. The local meteorological department says the typhoon intensified from a tropical depression early Friday as it traversed the South China Sea. Most parts of Hainan have seen heavy downpours and strong winds. Ferry services in the Qiongzhou Strait have been suspended since Wednesday. Lionrock is also affecting Hong Kong, where the third-highest storm signal was issued early Saturday. Transport networks, schools and offices have been shut down.
