A spoon-billed sandpiper has a distinctive black spatula bill that it uses to catch larvae and invertebrates underwater. The species was listed as endangered in 2004 and upgraded to critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List four years later. The Yellow Sea region holds the primary stopover sites for many shorebirds migrating to and from the northern breeding grounds, including the spoon-billed sandpiper.
