Chinese FM calls on efforts to deepen ties with Brazil despite pandemic

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China and Brazil should strengthen strategic communication and political mutual trust and level up pragmatic cooperation despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wang made the remarks in a virtual meeting with Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Franca on Thursday. 

Wang said China and Brazil are two major countries and emerging markets, and both should shoulder responsibilities for maintaining world peace and promoting global development.

Despite the global pandemic, both countries should continue to deepen cooperation in various fields, Wang said.

China is willing to continue to provide Brazil with more finished vaccine products and raw materials, and continue to carry out vaccine research and production cooperation till Brazil finally defeat the virus, he continued.

China welcomes Brazil to participate in the 4th China International Import Expo and is willing to import more high-quality agricultural products, Wang said.

Wang also welcomes Brazilian athletes to participate in the Winter Olympics in China.

China hopes Brazil will continue to provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory market environment for Chinese-funded enterprises to operate in Brazil, and adhere to an objective and open attitude in 5G cooperation, he added.

Franca said Brazil attaches great importance to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

He said Brazil thanks China for its strong support for its fight against the pandemic, and it is willing to continue to expand cooperation with China in areas such as vaccines.

It also hopes to promote bilateral cooperation in various areas ranging from economy and trade to agriculture, and from space to climate change, he continued.

In terms of the 5G technology, Franca said Brazil will not exclude any equipment supplier, he added.

Brazil believes China will definitely host a successful Winter Olympics in Beijing next year, he said.
