The Chinese State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office rejects the accusation that China misused UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, to exclude Taiwan from international organizations, and says claims by some U.S. politicians that Taiwan should have a role in the UN are groundless.
"The date when Resolution 2758 was passed was the date the 'Draft Resolution on Dual Representation' proposed by countries like the U.S. was rejected," said Ma Xiaoguang, a Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson.
"The mistakes of some U.S. politicians are that they ignore history and jurisprudence, deny the authority of the resolution, attempt to reverse the verdict and stand against the mainstream international community," he said.
The spokesperson went on to criticize claims by U.S. officials including Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Taiwan should participate in the UN system.
"These comments severely violate the relevant UN resolution, one-China principle and three joint communiques between China and the U.S. and send a signal that is gravely wrong," Ma said.
The spokesperson also slammed attempts by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to seek independence through supposed constitutional amendments as a conspiracy.
Ma called on all responsible political parties and far-sighted people to see through the DPP's plot and use concrete actions to protect peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and the well-being of people in Taiwan.
"The vast majority of Taiwan compatriots should oppose any so-called constitutional amendments," Ma said.
