Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday that China welcomes Equatorial Guinea to join the Global Development Initiative (GDI).

In a phone conversation with Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, Xi said China stands ready to work with Equatorial Guinea and other African countries to promote sustainable and common development of developing countries.

Noting that the two countries' bilateral relations have maintained a high-level of development in recent years, Xi said the Chinese side appreciates Equatorial Guinea's support on Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and human rights issues.

China will always support Equatorial Guinea in safeguarding its national sovereignty and exploring a development path that suits its own national realities, and advance more fruitful results out of cooperation in various fields for the benefit of the two peoples, Xi said.

The Chinese side will continue to assist Equatorial Guinea on COVID-19 vaccines, deepen medical and health cooperation between the two countries and expand cooperation in various fields within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), he added.

Xi also said China and Africa should strengthen unity, coordination and mutual support to safeguard international fairness and justice as well as the common interests of developing countries.

For his part, Obiang said Equatorial Guinea will actively take part in the BRI and GDI, and is ready to work with China to boost cooperation in all areas.

He said his country has always seen China as an important strategic partner and will always abide by the one-China policy, support China's stance on issues concerning its core interests and safeguard multilateralism.

Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of China's sending of medical expert teams to his country, Obiang spoke highly of the Chinese contribution, and expressed gratitude.
