The Chinese mainland recorded 39 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, with 23 cases of local transmissions and 16 from overseas, data from the National Health Commission (NHC) showed on Thursday.

Of the new local cases, eight were reported in Gansu, seven in Inner Mongolia, three in Beijing, two in Ningxia, and one each in Heilongjiang, Shandong and Sichuan, the NHC said.

In addition, 31 new asymptomatic cases were recorded, 11 of which were locally transmitted, while 408 asymptomatic patients remain under medical observation.

Confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland now total at 96,938, with the death toll unchanged at 4,636.

The latest tally of confirmed cases in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan region is as follows:

Hong Kong: 12,335 (12,033 recoveries, 213 deaths)

Macao: 77 (66 recoveries)

Taiwan: 16,388 (13,742 recoveries, 847 deaths)
