Stanislav Pozdnyakov, president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), said he's convinced that the 2022 Winter Olympic Games will be a fantastic sporting event.

"I believe the 2022 Winter Olympic Games will be a fantastic Olympic Games. More importantly, it will be a safe Olympic Games for both athletes and spectators," Pozdnyakov told China Media Group (CMG) at the press conference for the 100-day countdown to the 2022 Winter Games on Wednesday in Moscow.

Russian athletes will compete under the acronym ROC, like they did in the earlier Summer Olympics in Tokyo. They will send 215 athletes to China, which is the largest delegation among all attending teams, according to Pozdnyakov. He also revealed that 102 athletes have already secured qualification for Beijing 2022. The final participation list will be confirmed by the end of January 2022.

"It's a great accomplishment for every athlete to attend the Olympics," said the ROC chief. "I hope our athletes will not only have this joy, but also share the delight of victory with their family, friends and teammates."

Pozdnyakov was an excellent fencer when he was young, winning four gold and one bronze sabre medals for Russia after attending the Olympics for the first time in Barcelona in 1992.

"I was most impressed by the atmosphere of the great Olympic family during my first Olympic trip (in Barcelona). All the athletes were together under the same roof, taking the same route every day and eating meals at the same cafeteria. It's undoubtedly such power of uniting the whole world of the Olympics that impressed me the most," said Pozdnyakov.

The ROC boss said they are now studying the playbooks released by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee on Monday. Pozdnyakov told CMG that he saw the efforts via the playbooks invested by the Beijing organizing committee to prioritize the safety and health of both participants and locals.

He believes that as long as everyone follows the playbooks, the 2022 Winter Olympics will be both exciting and secure.
