Washington's plan to deploy intermediate-range missiles in Europe poses a threat, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the opening of a series of defense conferences in Sochi on Monday, adding Russia will "adequately respond" to foreign countries' attempts to break strategic parity.

Russia is concerned that an efficient missile defense will allow its Western adversaries to abandon the mutual assured defense doctrine that has for decades prevented nuclear superpowers from attacking each other.
