Pakistan and local Taliban militants have agreed on a one-month ceasefire which may be extended if both sides agree, Pakistani authorities announced on Monday.

"The government of Pakistan and banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have agreed on a complete ceasefire," said Pakistan's Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry in a statement.

The truce could be extended if talks continue to make progress, he added.

Established in 2007, the TTP is an alliance of militant groups based in northwest Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan.

In a statement, TTP spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani confirmed the ceasefire beginning November 9 will remain in place until December 9, during which both sides will form a committee to continue talks, adding that both sides will adhere to the ceasefire.

There have been numerous failed attempts to reach peace agreements in the past. The latest talks were initiated following the victory of the Afghan Taliban in August and the two sides have been meeting across the border in Afghanistan with the aid of Afghan Taliban leaders.
