Iran said on Monday that the United States should provide guarantees that it will not abandon the 2015 nuclear deal again, if talks to revive the agreement succeed. The nuclear deal is formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Indirect talks between Iran and the United States, which stalled in June after the election of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, are set to resume on November 29 in Vienna to reinstate the JCPOA.

"The U.S. should show that it has the capability and will to provide guarantees that it will not abandon the deal again if the talks to revive the deal succeed," Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told a virtual news conference.

"We shall spare no effort in advancing our national interests including removal of illegal sanctions," said Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani on Twitter. He will meet with European counterparts in the upcoming days.

In a phone conversation with British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss on Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian added that countries participating in the Vienna negotiations must fulfill their earlier commitment of trade normalization with Iran.

He also highlighted the responsibility of the U.S. since former President Donald Trump unilaterally quit the nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran.

The European signatories to the nuclear deal are serious and eager to make progress in the upcoming negotiations, said Truss.

The meeting in Vienna will be chaired by Enrique Mora on behalf of EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, according to a statement from the EU's European External Action Service.

The remaining parties to the deal – Russia, China, Germany, France, Britain and Iran – will be represented, said the EU statement.
