France is at the start of the fifth wave of COVID-19 pandemic, French Health Minister Olivian Veran said on Wednesday, adding that the COVID-19 infection rate in the country rose 40 percent in the past week.

The health ministry reported 11,833 newly-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in France to 7,244,040.
