U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday reaffirmed the U.S. government's long-standing one-China policy, stated that the U.S. does not support "Taiwan independence," and expressed hope that peace and stability would be maintained in the Taiwan Straits.
Biden made the remarks during a virtual meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The U.S. will not seek to change the Chinese political system and will not seek to contain China by strengthening Washington's alliances or provoke a conflict with China, Biden said.
The U.S. remains committed to its one-China policy, he added.
